Limitations

Jan 3, 2021 11:06am

We surround ourselves with the beautiful myths that we need to continue with lives that if stripped of these artful embellishments, would reveal themselves for the dismal, grey, meaningless reality from which we turn our eyes. Chief among these myths is our desire for immortality. If only we could figure out how to get out of here alive!

I watched a documentary about the Polish sculptor Stanislav Szukalski which led me to Polish poet Adam Mickiewicz. Reading about the life, loves and politics of Mickiewicz in his time in his world, I’m amazed at the genius and creativity of the humans and become all the more aware of my own limitations and the ridiculous delusions I had regarding myself and my abilities. All should have been clear to me by the time I was 30 but the ego is a powerful intoxicant and my non-existent achievements assumed monumental proportions inside that sealed and hardened vault we call the mind. All that entered passed through a filter designed by my self to feed the delusion…all else, all that did not fit the narrative was winnowed and discarded. I suspect this sort of thing happens with others to some degree but my limited ability to gnothi seauton renders my understanding of other minds, other motives virtually meaningless.

I’m reading Pessoa’s Prose but so far it is not as good as “The Book of Disquiet”

Broken Record

January 5, 2021

Every day my thoughts are the same broken record. I know this tune and anticipate the scratch that leads to the circular reasoning. Lift the needle the next day and listen again with the mistaken notion that I’ll hear the entire album. Wasted time but what can take the place of the only questions worthy of us?

The news report said there are people creating social media accounts for the sole purpose of shaming quarantine breakers. These people will be the useful idiots of the coming fascist regime that will seek to control every aspect of our lives.

They will certainly use vaccinations to limit choices and force obedience. Someday, in addition to implants we’ll use for wireless commerce, we will all be forced to implant cameras that will transmit everything we see to the cloud for review by the rest of humanity. Then a new class of self-appointed judges will ferret out every instance of politically questionable behavior and the perps will be shackled and put on display for public humiliation and this is what we will call freedom from incorrect thoughts.

Does liberty give you the the right to be wrong? Today is the Georgia election that will determine the majority party in the Senate. What sequence of events could return us to some sustainable polity? Perhaps none and the experiment has run its course and we’ll have to start over. This year will be interesting to say the least.
