The Coming Maelstrom

October 4, 2024 8:48am

It’s coming. Look around….the thin layer of common sense and sanity upon which we tread is weaker by the day.

“Easy is the descent into darkness.
The door to hell stands open, day and night.
But to retrace one’s steps, to return once more
to the pure clean air, and cheerfulness and life:
That is the task, that is our true labour.”

Vergil, Aeneid

“To whom can I give warning?
Who will listen when I speak?
Their ears are closed,
      and they cannot hear.
They scorn the word of the Lord.
They don’t want to listen at all.

From the least to the greatest,
their lives are ruled by greed.
From prophets to priests,
      they are all frauds.
They offer superficial treatments
      for my people’s mortal wound.
They give assurances of peace
      when there is no peace.
Are they ashamed of their disgusting actions?
Not at all—they don’t even know how to blush.
Therefore, they will lie among the slaughtered.
They will be brought down when I punish them, says the Lord.”

Jeremiah 6:10-11,13-16

Darkening Skies and Election Blues

October 31, 12:38pm

We had almost no rain in October, but the sky has darkened, and the rain should arrive any minute. The whole nation faces dark times ahead. We voted early today with the election just days away. The rhetoric is inflaming both sides and there is wide-spread discussion of civil unrest regardless of the outcome. One thing is certain, the economic future is dire: we cannot recover from the national debt.

The Democrats liken Trump to Hitler, but I wonder how many of these pundits have ever read a single word that Hitler wrote? Most would be surprised at the positions he held on many issues of his times. The vast majority of people have opinions based only on the opinions of other people; few bother to do their own research.

Closer to home is a ballot initiative to amend the KY constitution to allow for the legislature to fund private school vouchers. I support this as a way to put pressure on teacher unions. We spend more and more money on public education and test scores continually decline. Why continue with procedures that yield poor results?

This problem is endemic in our society and will not improve until we once again embrace meritocracy regardless of which individual groups are affected.
