Changes

January 23, 2025

It is 35 degrees today after holding below freezing for days. The new year began with changes on the horizon. Right after the holidays, we were headed for Mexico to a destination wedding. The weather caused a flight delay putting us in Zihautanejo a day behind. Eventually, almost 70 guests arrived, and the ceremony proceeded before a rare rain fell during the father-daughter dance. I held my first born and whispered words of encouragement while we swayed. After, I sat there in Puerto Pariso listening to Fleetwood Mac and remembering the promise of youth and considering the future in which all decisions are behind, and one path remains. No questions before me, no decisions. Just serenity and calm and certainty.

M-theory and Amor Fati

I am reading about string theory and the M-theory proposed by physicist Edward Witten in 1995 to unify much of string theory. Witten himself didn’t offer a solid reason for the name of his theory – saying it could stand for magic, mystery, or membrane.

The attempt to get a layman’s rudimentary understanding of M-theory led me to a youtube video of physicist Brian Greene discussing his book which integrates the theory with the physical world in which humans exist and our philosophical explanations of our reality on the macro level.

Greene’s view of reality is bleak when viewed from an emotional human perspective, but denial does not alter the facts, and one is finally washed up on the shores of Nietzschean love of fate.
